Used Car Buyer's Checklist in Hendersonville, NC

If you're ready to find a replacement vehicle, you've most likely considered buying used, especially if you're trying to save money. Buying used definitely can save you money, but there are a few extra steps you should take to ensure you're ready to drive home a quality used vehicle. Keep reading to learn more.

✔ Do Your Research

Before you begin looking for a car, ask yourself if there is a certain type of vehicle that you need. By deciding on what type of car to look for, you will have a more specific list of inspection items to check. When researching for the vehicle, find out what the common problems are for the models you are considering.

✔ Exterior Checks

Always check the vehicle's body condition. Walk around the vehicle and note any scratches, dents or rust. Additionally, all the body panels should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should be able to open and close. Inspect the tires as well. All of the tires should be the same brand and should be in good condition (no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread). Lastly, always check the lights. They should all work properly and be without cracks and damages in addition to showing no signs of moisture.

✔ Interior Checks

When inspecting the interior, one of the most main things to check for is an odor. If it smells like mold, must or mildew, that could indicate a water leak or flood damage. Additionally, check the seats to see if they are worn or have any tears in the upholstery. They should all work properly and you should be able to get the driver’s seat into a comfortable position for you. Also, you always need to test out the controls and instruments to see that they are working properly. Finally, take a look at the roof to check for signs of staining or water leaking through a sunroof or window.

✔ Under the Hood

When looking under the hood, check the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. Everything should be at its proper level, and it should be free of any cracks, leaks or water. Also look underneath the vehicle to see if anything is leaking.

✔ The Test Drive

The test-drive is definitely one of the most crucial parts of your inspection. When starting the vehicle, see how long it takes for the car to get up and running, and if there are any odd noises. You'll want to take the vehicle on a variety of different roads so that you can test it at different speeds. Additionally, check to see if the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes offer good stopping power without pulling the vehicle to one side.

✔ Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection

Before you close the deal on a vehicle, you need to get the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a Vehicle History Report. Most dealers will provide a report on all of their used vehicles. Also have a trusted repair shop fully inspects the vehicle before purchasing it.
